How to get an Internship
Need help finding an internship?
These five steps will give you the opportunity to assess your career interests, identify general resources, receive advice about specific concerns, walk through the application process and prepare for your transition into the workplace.

Research Your Career Interests

It helps to narrow your career interests before you begin your internship search because you can target internships based on what you want. Utilize the following resources to help you research information about specific occupations:

Getting ready to apply for Internships
Some internship will require that you submit an application, a resume and cover letter, a writing sample and/or letters of recommendation. Make sure you are aware of what is expected as part of the application process and submit all requested materials if you want to be considered as a candidate.

While not all internships have the same application process there are general steps you will typically need to take to apply and be a competitive candidate. These include:

  • Creating an effective and tailored resume and cover letter
  • Have your resume critiqued during Take 10 drop in hours (Mon-Fri 10am-4pm) or make an individual appointment with a counselor
  • Prepare for the interview

UCI Internship Programs
UCI Professional Internship Program in the School of Social Sciences (Academic Credit)
http://www.socsci.uci.edu/ssarc/internship/index.html This program provides ALL undergraduate students an opportunity to engage in a professional internship. Enrollment in the Social Sciences 197 course is necessary to receive academic credit for all unpaid internships.
Public Affairs Internship Program (Academic Credit)
https://eee.uci.edu/programs/PAIP/ This program allows students to receive course credit for completing an internship in the fields of government, law, media, and non-profit organizations.
Social Ecology Field Study (Academic Credit)
http://socialecology.uci.edu/students/undergrad/fieldstudy The Field Study requirement is designed to provide students with the opportunity to examine social problems, to evaluate the merit of ideas presented in the classroom, and to educate students in conducting naturalistic observations and investigations. This is a required program for all students affiliated with the School of Social Ecology.
Public Health Practicum, School of Social Ecology (Academic Credit)
http://socialecology.uci.edu/students/undergrad/pubhlth/practicum Public Health Practicum (PH 195W) is an 8-unit required course for those majoring in Public Health Policy or Public Health Science.
Humanities Internship Program (No credit. Paid $12/hr minimum)
http://www.humanities.uci.edu/intern/ The program is open to declared School of Humanities majors who are in good academic standing and who will have completed the Humanities Core Course (or the Core Course substitution) by the end of spring quarter. Students must be enrolled full time for the duration of the internship. Participants must commit a full year (summer through spring) to the internship program.
Film & Media Studies Internship Program, School of Humanities (Academic Credit)
http://www.humanities.uci.edu/filmstudies/students/internships.php This internship option is available to all Film and Media Studies majors and minors of Junior or Senior standing only. Interns must have at least a "B" (3.0) average overall.
Administrative Intern Program (Academic Credit)
http://www.dos.uci.edu/leadership/aip/index.php Under the guidance of carefully chosen UCI mentors, Administrative Interns work 10 hours per week in campus departments where they assume responsibility for projects and enhance their leadership skills. Students selected for this year-long program also enroll in a three-quarter course through the Paul Merage School of Business where they receive 12 units of graded credit for the academic year.
UCDC Academic Internship Program (Academic Credit)
http://www.dccenter.uci.edu/ Each quarter, the UCI Washington D.C. Academic Internship Program provides undergraduate students from ALL majors a multi-dimensional educational experience in the nation's capital. Students undertake cultural and social activities, as well as education and academic pursuits. Students from all UC campuses live and study together while interning at any one of the numerous agencies and organizations in the city and surrounding areas.
UCCS- University of California Center Sacramento Internship (Academic Credit)
http://uccs.universityofcalifornia.edu/ UCCS Scholar Interns from UC Irvine participate in two main activities during their residence in Sacramento: an eight unit professional internship for 3-4 days per week with an organization or office that fits with their academic or professional interests and a 4-unit public policy research seminar. Participants can also enroll in a 4-unit elective seminar that complements the public policy research seminar. Participants work at their internships Monday-Thursday and attend class on Fridays. On the weekends interns explore the Sacramento area, study, host visiting family and friends, and take occasional trips back home.
SAGE Scholars Program (Paid)
http://www.sagescholars.uci.edu/ SAGE Scholars at UC Irvine is a program dedicated to helping high-achieving and economically-disadvantaged students in developing their professional skills. Open to sophomores and juniors of all majors.
Center for International Education (Possible Academic Credit)

Career Center Marketing Internship

Description:

The UCI Career Center is a fast-paced, fun work environment that is connected to all constituents including students and employers through the services and events provided. The Career Center team is dedicated to excellence, innovation, and helping achieve career goals.

As part of the Career Center team, the Marketing Intern will gain valuable hands-on marketing and sales experience, while working closely with students and professionals. The Marketing Intern will be part of a small team that collaborates to develop, implement, and evaluate innovative marketing campaigns. The team will focus on creative brainstorming, interactive one-on-one marketing, and marketing research. The internship will have a strong emphasis on sales, in order to promote Career Center programs and services.  

Qualifications:

  • Strong presentation skills and excellent verbal communication skills

Peer Consultant Internship Program

WHAT IS THE CAREER CENTER PEER CONSULTANT INTERNSHIP?

  1. It’s an 8 hour per/week - academic year long internship beginning in September and ending in June.

  2. Interns can receive 4 units of credit each quarter, and the internship can also be used as Social Ecology Field Study Credit.

  3. Interns receive extensive training in the Fall Quarter, and then implement what they learn in the Winter and Spring Quarters.

  4. Interns advise students about career planning, resumes, job search, interviewing, and graduate school.

  5. Interns videotape a student’s practice interview and then provide feedback.

  6. Interns provide Career Center orientations and workshops to campus clubs and housing units.

  7. Interns promote and market Career Center services through various career fairs and events, postering fliers, classroom announcements, outreach tables, etc.

HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR THE PEER PROGRAM?

  1. Applications are available online and in the Career Center in the Winter Quarter.

  2. Applications are due in March and submitted to the Career Center.

  3. Group interviews take place in Spring Quarter.

  4. A group of about 15 interns are carefully selected in Spring Quarter.

  5. Orientation and training of new Peers begin in September.
