Conducting an informational interview with working professionals in your prospective career field is one of the best ways to gain more knowledge about the requirements, rewards, and even day to day responsibilities of working in a specific industry or occupation. 

To initiate an informational interview, ask the professional, either by phone, in person, or via email that you would like to meet with them "at their convenience" to learn more about their occupation.  A courteous, positive, and understanding attitude will help you begin the networking process. 

Prior to the interview, research the occupation as much as you can by utilizing resources such as Vault, organize the questions you would like to ask, and prepare to take notes. 

After the interview, thank the individual for taking their time out to meet with you and answer your questions.  A hand-written Thank You note is also a nice touch.
